Ingredients

Scale
  • ¾ cup slivered almonds (ground)
  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar (divided)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 8 ounces maraschino cherries (halved, reserve juice from jar)
  • 1 teaspoon maraschino cherry juice (for glaze)
  • red decorating sugar
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon maraschino cherry juice (for glaze)
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract (for glaze)
  • milk (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and ¾ cup powdered sugar until well blended. Stir in vanilla.
  3. In another bowl, combine flour, ground almonds, and salt. Gradually mix into the butter mixture until fully incorporated.
  4. Take about 1 tablespoon of dough and form a pit in the center; place a halved maraschino cherry inside and shape into a ball. Place on parchment-lined baking sheet and flatten slightly.
  5. Bake for 8-9 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Cool on wire rack.
  6. Prepare the glaze by mixing powdered sugar, maraschino cherry juice, almond extract, and enough milk for dipping consistency.
  7. Dip cooled cookies into glaze, then sprinkle with red decorating sugar while still moist.
